Unhooked is a painting I am proud to enter into the 2023 US Coast Guard Art Program. It is my depiction of two crew members unhooking a buoy. I never thought about or realized all the maintenance of buoys our coast guard performs seasonally. This scene is based on the James Rankin crew in Maryland, working to unhook a buoy from the chains of the Rankin's crane. They are exchanging summer buoys for winter buoys. I never knew there were different buoys required in summertime vs. wintertime.
The buoy work is both dangerous and routine. Our service men and women consider working on tall ladders with heavy equipment on ships and at sea, and climbing on top of buoys to be a normal day's work. Personally, the mom in me wants to stand at the ready with ibuprofen for when they finish.
