The gaillardia, or beach flower, also called blanket flower, has my mad respect. This flower grows all over Texas, all over the Outer Banks beaches of North Carolina, and just about everywhere north and south and in between. It's the only flower, in 25 years of living in our Northern Virginia suburb, that has survived in my gardens.
I first heard about it when a collector asked me to paint some for their beach house in North Carolina. I ordered a plant and grew it so I would have a crop of flowers to work from. Now, I am ordering seeds each spring and fall to plant in hard to grow areas of shade, foundation overpour with shallow soil depth, slopes. And the best part is, the chipmunks, woodchucks, foxes, rabbits, crows, squirrels, deer, mice and snakes ignore it. I can't even plant chives or sage without attracting so much wildlife I feel like Snow White. So this is a huge breakthrough!
I love my beach flowers. They bloom from spring to late fall, and put a smile on my face every day.
