It's not every day somebody contacts me and asks me to paint his dream. My collector commissioned this painting as a surprise for his wife. He has had this recurring dream about himself and his wife, from their younger days. I worked from photos of them taken decades ago, and from images that captured the right hat, the right boat, the right dress, etc. He wanted the willow to frame the two figures, and I love that. The willow contains a natural form of aspirin with healing properties. I was honored to get a glimpse into the private lives of this couple.
I wish I could find a way to market the fact that I enjoy painting commissions of conceptual (not real) scenes. I have done it with countless pets and animals where the photos used for reference have long since faded and I am painting from color descriptions. I've painted conceptual portraits for the Langham Hotel in Boston. Many of the painting I create are conceptual in nature. Creating scenes that look real from suggestions and stories that don't physically exist - it's in my wheelhouse and I love doing it!
