Elizabeth II Afloat

The Island of Roanoke in The Outer Banks has a rich history. The Elizabeth II is a historic floating landmark we can tour at Festival Park in Manteo. The story of this recreated 16th century sailing ship involves British colonists, Native Americans, and ultimately the disappearance of 121 people.

Personally, I am inspired to paint this ship because it is beautiful. The pegs and boards are hand hewn. The idea that these vessels were created at a time without today's technology is so intriguing to me. I'm pretty sure I would not survive a long voyage with limited supplies and the dangers of the sea. But standing on deck, the view is so intoxicating, you can't help but romanticize what it must have been like.
