I went to a photo shoot at American Frontier Production in Easton, KS. Robert Culbertson, a former stunt double and an expert in 18th century plains history, has a working ranch with a western town, fort, ponds, creeks, cabins and horse stables on it. His friends are Native Peoples, stunt men and women, period re enactors, wardrobe and prop experts, etc. The ranch hands and family and local diner owner all work together to create one of the best opportunities to photograph what life was like when Kansas was being settled centuries ago.
One morning, Robert (who goes by Cowboy) set up a "glowy tipi" for me. Those are my words, not his. When I arrived at sunrise, the scene he had created took my breath away. Elegant in its simplicity, yet so intricate in the layers of colors, many of which are not adequately captured by camera imagery, I was smitten. I want to paint this tipi as many times as I possibly can. I've never spent the night in a tipi, but I would do so in a heartbeat, just to wake up to this.
