Goats from Spain

Beginning in the 1500’s Spanish explorers brought goats from Spain to what would become the United States.  They were a ready source of milk, meat, and hides.  By using goats for meat, it allowed cattle to be reserved for draft power, essential for crop production.  Spanish goats were the only goats known across the United States for more than 300 years.  They were hardy and rugged, thriving on rough forage.
