The inspiration for this painting is Childe Hassam's 1917 painting "Allies Day."
I see it all the time at The National Gallery of Art in D.C. and every time I visit New York City, I think of it when I pass by Rockefeller Center. The center hangs all American flags on U.S. holidays. I always feel a swell of patriotism when I walk by them, no matter whose flags they are that day. Hassam painted this piece in May of 1917 when America entered WWI.
