The inspiration for this painting is the Pieter de Ring painting, "Still Life With a Cherry Branch Over a Roemer" painted around 1655 and now in a private collection.
Roemer glasses were common in Dutch and German homes during the golden age. The applied decorations on their hollow stems are called prunts. I find them fun to paint. There was a lot of symbology in 17th century Dutch still life painting. The artists told stories by choosing their objects carefully. Cherries symbolize the soul, and glass often pointed to the fragility of life. Knowing this, I was drawn to this image that has a narrative about how our souls need to be treated with care.
