Sometimes I paint a piece that is so very personal, it is a self portrait even though my face isn't in it. This is one of those pieces. I am almost an empty nester. The youngest of our three children has big plans to move across the country. The older two have careers and houses of their own. My parenting job is done. Right? Why then are there still burning embers in my empty nest? Why are there sleepless nights and days full of worry about the specters of their lives that I no longer have any control over? If this is supposed to be a time of relaxation, retirement, and reaping the rewards of a job well done, well I'm doing it all wrong.
At the same time, I am so excited to experience the adventures that have been put on hold until now. Every step of this parenting journey has been unpredictable and swirling with conflicting emotions. It's been the wildest, scariest, most fulfilling and incredible ride of my lifetime.
