In Venice, there's the Grand Canal that the water taxis travel. But there are smaller canals between buildings, that gondolas and small boats navigate. It's how goods are delivered, it's how fire and rescue personnel access people who need help. Most of us have bikes or cars in the back of our property. Many Venetians have a small water craft out back for emergencies. Because these small canals share space with the pedestrian streets, and because there are no large, several lane roads (there are no cars in Venice) it's REALLY hard to follow a map of Venice. It's a tangle of dead end canals and sidewalks. 

Don't get me wrong. Every dead end, like this one, is beautiful. But I kept thinking how glad I was that I wasn't in a hurry. It takes awhile to fine your way around the buildings, to get to where you want to go. It's part of the charm.
