LEARN TO PAINT THE STILL LIFE FROM LIFE!

- Instruction is relaxed, in my home studio

- Sarah will teach you how she paints the still life from life, using traditional oil painting techniques

- Learn how indirect painting techniques improve the realism and paint quality in your artwork

- Maximum of 10 students allows ample one on one time with the instructor

- Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to come and learn

WHEN: May 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 in 2019, 9:30am - 4:30pm, plus an optional trip to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. May 9, to enjoy select still life paintings there with Sarah Siltala. There is no additional fee for this outing. You can meet us there or travel with us via the Metro from Ashburn, VA. All workshop participants are invited.

Tuition includes use of easel if you don't bring one, a space to set up your still life, and lighting

Payment in full is required to reserve a spot in the workshop, and you are committing to find a suitable replacement if you cannot attend for any reason. Less than 60 days before workshop dates, we will not be able to give refunds of any kind. For workshops with waiting lists, we can offer full refunds up to 60 days prior, minus the PayPal or Square Register fees if you paid using those methods.

NOTE: I do not advise the booking of non refundable travel and lodging tickets prior to 60 days before the workshop. I will contact students before the 60 day mark, in the unlikely event we will not be able to hold the workshop as scheduled.

Each day, Sarah will give a short explanation of the day's lesson, followed by a painting demonstration. On May 9, 2019, she will also be visiting the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. All students are invited to join her. You can meet us there at the museum, or commute with us from Ashburn to the National mall, via the D.C. metro system. Of course, the museum visit is optional.

Here is Sarah's Description of the workshop:

This workshop will concentrate on developing the skills required to create a still life in the classical indirect method.

Indirect painting is a process where the elements of painting are broken down into individual steps.

Each day of the five day workshop will concentrate on a different element: drawing and design, capturing value, creating luminous color, and finishing details. Learning about color and the properties of different oil paints, whether transparent or opaque, will aid the artist in achieving realistic form and depth. You will learn how to capture realism by studying light and shadow, capturing a full range of values and layering rich color.

Mornings will be spent on exercises to strengthen skills in layering paint; blending and brushwork, rendering light and shadow on a lit form, and glazing transparent color. The afternoons will be spent using the skills practiced to create a still life.
